Crossmaglen Credit Union

We are a community-focused credit union based in Northern Ireland, dedicated to accessible financial services and promoting financial wellbeing. As a not-for-profit co-operative, we support members through fair lending, savings, and financial education. Serving individuals and families locally, our team of 14 staff (plus one on career break) is committed to delivering high-quality, member-centred services in a fair, supportive workplace that reflects our mission of ethical and responsible financial stewardship.
Motivation for Living Wage Accreditation
We have always aimed to be a fair and supportive employer. Achieving Living Wage accreditation formalises our commitment to ensuring all staff, including part-time, entry-level, and ancillary roles, receive a wage that reflects the cost of living. It demonstrates our transparency and equity, reassures staff and members of our values, and strengthens our reputation as an ethical employer in the heart of our community.
Implementation Process
The process was straightforward. We registered online and had a brief call with Ruth, the Living Wage Programme Officer. Salaries were reviewed to ensure all staff met the Living Wage standard, including part-time and ancillary roles. The board of directors approved adjustments, and once aligned, accreditation was quickly secured. The process confirmed our commitment to fair pay while keeping implementation efficient and transparent.
Additional Workplace Changes
No wider workplace changes were required. However, the process prompted a full review of pay structures, reinforcing fairness, consistency, and transparency across all roles. It also provided an opportunity to engage staff, highlighting our commitment to wellbeing and recognition. Embedding the Living Wage strengthens our culture of respect and aligns with our broader mission as a community-focused organisation.
Challenges and Barriers
There were no major barriers. The main consideration was securing board approval for salary adjustments to meet the Living Wage standard. Clear communication of benefits and transparent evaluation of all roles ensured full support. The accreditation process with Living Wage was straightforward, with planning and engagement enabling a smooth, confident implementation.
Benefits of Living Wage Accreditation
Although very recent, benefits are clear: all 14 staff now earn at least the Living Wage, including part-time and ancillary roles, demonstrating fairness and equity. Accreditation enhances staff morale and engagement, strengthens our reputation as an ethical employer, and positions us as a role model in the community. It also allows us to encourage other local employers to adopt fair pay practices, extending the positive impact beyond our organisation.
"Committing to pay the real Living Wage reflects our core values as a community-focused credit union. We believe every member of our team deserves fair, transparent, and respectful pay. This accreditation not only recognises the dedication of our staff but also reinforces our role as a responsible employer, setting a standard of fairness and wellbeing that extends into the community we serve."
