Are you prepared for Universal Credit?
The flagship policy in the government's welfare reform programme is being implemented from September 2017 onwards in Northern Ireland for fresh claims, and for those with certain changes of circumstances in legacy benefits.
This represents the biggest change to the Social Security system arguably since the 1940’s by merging in work financial support with out of work benefits and housing costs and with that profound change introduces a new way work the sector to advise and support clients.
Advice NI members have already raised a number of concerns about the roll out of Universal Credit. These include the fact that all claimants must have access to the internet, the minimum 6 week delay before the first payment can be made, the prospect of a harsher sanctions regime and ongoing issues about NI-specific identity verification.
We are offering flexible and tailored solutions to meet everyone’s training needs, from straightforward awareness sessions, to a 90 minute focus on client practicalities and all the way through to intensive 1 and 3 day accredited training courses. All of which, aim to ensure that we as a sector can protect vulnerable, local people navigating these changes.
We have upcoming awareness sessions in Belfast, Limavady and Ballymena in July and we will add sessions to other areas in Northern Ireland in the coming weeks. Alternatively, please contact us for information about arranging a bespoke session at your organisation or in your local area.
