Debt Action helps client with health problems deal with their debt

A client approached the Debt Action service for help as they were struggling to deal with their debt repayments due to suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety.Their financial situation was having a negative impact on their health.

This woman was single and living in private rental accommodation. She worked part-time and was in receipt of Personal Independence Payment. Following a reassessment, her PIP and WTC benefits had been stopped.

Because of this, the client’s income had been significantly reduced and she was struggling with her debt repayments, so she approached Debt Action for help.

At this point the woman had an overdraft and credit card debts totalling over £8,000, but she couldn’t afford the repayments.

The Debt Action adviser completed a Financial Statement, which showed that the client had a disposable income of just £41 per month. The adviser then went on to help the client create a new budget. Together they investigated the client’s spending on non-essential items and she was able to make considerable reductions and savings to her household expenses.

Advice NI’s debt adviser went through a number of options with this client. She decided her best option was to try and get the debts written off because of her mental health issues.

The adviser completed the Debt and Mental Health Evidence form and sent this together with supporting documents to the client’s creditors.

Due to the client’s poor health and low income, her creditors agreed to write the debt off. This prevented the client suffering any further financial stress and anxiety.

The client was delighted with the service. She said:

“Thank you for dealing with my case, it was a great relief to get the help and support I needed.”
