Debt Action Update March 2015
Since the launch of Debt Action in August 2012, it has helped over 14,000 people deal with over £229 million of debt.
Our advisers advise on a range of issues and strategies including repossession, bankruptcies and Debt Relief Orders. They have also been successful in helping clients to reclaim payment protection insurance where it has been mis-sold. In the case highlighted below, a client was successful in claiming a refund of over £20,000.
The client and his wife were at risk of losing their home due to mortgage and secured loan arrears and they also had non-priority debts. The adviser discovered that the clients were paying payment protection insurance in relation to their secured loan and that they had grounds to complain on the basis that they were told that they would not get the loan without the insurance. The adviser lodged a complaint with the lender who then offered to refund the clients’ payments which came to over £20,000. The clients are now in a position to clear their housing arrears in full and will also be able to address their unsecured debt.
Debt Action NI has a number of access options. Clients can call our Freephone helpline on 0800 917 4607 to speak directly to an adviser between 8am and 9pm Monday – Friday and 9am -3pm on a Saturday. They can browse our dedicated website, where they can send an appointment request, email an adviser, chat to our virtual adviser or use our online budgeting tool. We also have a list of the contact details and location of advisers in local areas on our website. Alternatively, clients can also text the word ‘Action’ to 81025 and an adviser will call them back. Advisers offer face to face appointments and home visits to those who are most vulnerable.
