Volunteering Opportunity - Mobile Advice Van Driver

Advice NI has developed an outreach mobile advice van service to deliver advice to the most marginalised and vulnerable people.

This service, staffed by trained and experienced advisers will help people in accessing their rights and entitlements, maximising their income and addressing financial/money concerns. The van will be hosted at various member’s sites/centres or in specific community areas of need as identified by our members.

Location of Position: Journeys will depart from and return to Suite D – First Floor Block 3, Forestview, Purdy’s Lane, Newtownbreda, Belfast BT8 4AR
 
Responsible to: Arfawn Yasin (Head of Membership)
 
Time Commitment: Ad hoc as and when required (this is a developing service; the frequency of the role will increase as the service develops)
Travel and Expenses:
Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed in line with the charities travel and expenses policy

Description of role

The main duty of the Volunteer Driver will be to pick up the van and drive it to the particular area or centre so that the service can run at that particular time/on that particular day. The van will be pre-booked through Advice NI.

There will be associated waiting times involved dependent on the length of the session and the van will need to be returned to Advice NI offices. The Volunteer Driver will also be responsible for light maintenance such as checking fuel, oil, windscreen wash and tyres and an occasional external wash.

The Volunteer Driver will also be expected to work co-operatively with all members of staff and Advice NI members and adhere to the values, policies, practices and procedures, undertaking training as appropriate to develop skills.,

Skills and Qualifications

The role requires the following – the Volunteer must have/be:
  • Full clean UK Driver’s licence (The van is a VW Crafter and can be driven on a normal Category B driving license).
  • Between the ages of 21 and 70 and must have held a full driving license for at least 2 years.
  • Experienced driver
  • All insurance related to the van is covered by Advice NI however if the Volunteer uses own transport to and from volunteering activities they must have Business Insurance for own transport (there should be no extra cost for this)
  • Enjoy driving
  • Good time management skills
  • Good level of spoken English
  • Commitment to the ethos of volunteering
  • Friendly and proactive character
  • Good people skills and experience of interacting with vulnerable people
  • Be comfortable volunteering by oneself
  • Be able to use own initiative but able to ask for help when needed
N.B. The driver must adhere to the current rules and regulations in place at the time of use pertaining to Covid19 as per legislation and stipulated by the Public Health Agency. Advice NI will provide a stock of hand sanitizers and face masks to be used when driving and operating the vehicle, also to be mindful of social distancing if interacting with others.,

Training and Support

Volunteer will be given the following training and support:
  • Induction to organisation
  • Full training on all aspects of the role.
  • Ongoing support will be given as required and you will have opportunities to meet with the staff members and volunteers.
