Demand for advice rises

Advice NI highlights the issue of people struggling to stay warm at home

With unprecedented increases in the price of heating oil, gas and electric, in addition to soaring hikes in food and other household bills it is difficult to see how many low income households will be able to cope over the coming winter. Advice NI’s advisers are already reporting that many people are in real hardship and feeling stressed about how they will be able to make ends meet.

Demand for debt and money advice has seen a 6% increase over the year, and advisers have also been heavily involved in maximising people’s income particularly those reliant on state benefits and those in low paid work. It is vital that people are able to access all the help and support available, and that people have a chance to have their say when any changes are proposed to this help and support.

The proposed changes to the Warm Homes Scheme will impact on low income households across Northern Ireland and it is vital that everyone has the opportunity to have their say. Advice NI wants to ensure that everyone has a chance to feed into the consultation on the Warm Homes Scheme by facilitating an online discussion with everyone invited to log on to www.voiceni.net to find out more about what’s happening and have a say in shaping the scheme. Key findings from the eConsultation will then be fed back to the Department for Social Development. To participate in the online discussion, log on to www.voiceni.net
