Speaking at the launch of Advice NI's multi-lingual online resource, Director, Bob Stronge said:
“Migrant workers and families from minority ethnic communities across Northern Ireland may often ask for help about accessing advice and information on a range of financial support issues and we have conducted some research which found that language is often a barrier.
“Advice NI is trying to address this situation by developing a dedicated multi-lingual resource. It is a straightforward on-line introduction to tax credits and will help breakdown any language barriers and encourage the take-up of tax credits particularly amongst ethnic communities.
“The online resource has been developed with the assistance of funding from HM Revenue and Customs We appreciate the support we have received and look forward to continuing to work in partnership with HMRC in the future.”
The multi-lingual online resource includes a host of information on Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. Advice NI has developed a unique interactive, multi-lingual eLearning toolkit designed to help increase knowledge, skills and confidence on Tax Credit issues. The course is aimed at anyone who has little or no knowledge of Tax Credits and it covers:
- An introduction to the Tax Credit system
- An introduction to entitlement rules
- A summary of how changes in circumstances may effect entitlement
- An introduction to overpayments
Welcoming people to the event, Fred Cobain MLA said:
“I welcome the online resource being launched today – particularly as I believe that it will make a real difference in ensuring that people access their tax credit entitlements
I think that this approach, this technology and the way that this resource is going to be taken out to the various ethnic communities – is an example of best practice which should be considered by other providers of public services in Northern Ireland.”
The launch was held at the Long Gallery, Stormont, on Wednesday 16th April and was co-sponsored by Fred Cobain MLA, Anna Lo MLA and Claire McGill MLA.
