Course Content
With the basic personal allowance set at just under £6,500 for this tax year and next, people on low incomes, even benefits claimants, can easily fall within the UK tax bracket. This course will cover aspects of the UK taxation system that welfare rights advisers need to know. These will include how to work out basic income tax and national insurance computations, along with an outline of other taxes; the tax implications of starting work or setting up in business; settling direct tax liabilities, claiming repayments and understanding PAYE codes.
Delegates will learn about the basic rules of tax compliance, but also how best to help clients when things go wrong: handling HMRC enquiries and inspections – what are the taxpayer rights and safeguards that counterbalance HMRC powers, particularly where penalties are involved; how to pursue tax appeals and use the new internal review procedure to the best advantage. We shall consider the special tax rules that apply to carers of vulnerable adults or children, disabled people (including VAT reliefs), migrants, pensioners and others on low incomes. Finally, the course will pay particular attention to areas of overlap between tax and tax credits and the tax aspects of social security benefits.
